THE Sun newspaper has defended itself against allegations it accessed former prime minister Gordon Brown’s family medical records without his knowledge.

The tabloid, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s embattled News International, insisted information that Mr Brown’s son, Fraser, had cystic fibrosis was handed to it by a member of the public – a father whose child also suffered from the disease.

It also claimed Mr Brown and his wife, Sarah, gave senior staff at the paper consent to publish the November 2006 article.
