Airport liquid ban to be lifted within 3 years
Special scanners are to be introduced to ensure liquids are safe and do not include anything that could be used to blow up an airplane.
Airports have been given until the end of April 2013 to install and begin operating the new type of scanners.
Transport spokeswoman Helen Kearns said that airports who install them before this date can stop confiscating liquids from passengers.
This is one of a series of measures to reduce and streamline security at airports, introduced first after the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, which have been tightened several times since.
Commissioner Siim Kallas said he wants to see a ‘one-stop shop’ introduced that will result in once-off screening of all passengers, including those coming from third countries into the EU and transferring from one flight to another.
New rules should also eliminate duplication of security controls for the transport of cargo for hauliers in all member states.
