EUROSTAR said it would spend £30 million (€34m) to protect services from winter weather breakdowns which stranded five trains in the tunnel linking France and Britain.

A report into the chaos that sparked panic attacks among passengers and left them without food, water, air-conditioning or toilet facilities after rescue procedures failed also raised “serious concerns” about emergency evacuation plans.

The British and French governments ordered the review of failings after about 2,500 people were trapped in the tunnel for up to five hours.
