Charlie Simpson told his mother Leonora he wanted to do anything he could to help after watching children being pulled alive from the rubble.

Charlie set out to raise £500 for Unicef’s Haiti Appeal by riding his bike five miles around his local park, and his efforts inspired hundreds of people online who donated more than £50,000 in one day.

Just 24 hours later, the total had more than doubled.

Charlie, from Fulham, west London, said the pictures he saw on television were “quite sad”.

Mrs Simpson said he was really upset afterwards and they had a chat about what he could do to help.

She said the total pledged was “phenomenal”. “What started off as a little cycle round the park with his dad has turned into something a lot bigger than that.”

Michael Newsome, Unicef’s Haiti Appeal director, said it was “heart-warming” when a child tried to help others and the charity was “overwhelmed” by the responses.
