OFFICIALS in Kazakhstan said 38 people were killed in a fire at a drug treatment centre in the south of the Central Asian nation.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said the blaze broke out early yesterday and spread over an area of 650 square meters in Taldykorgan.

Authorities said emergency workers evacuated 40 people from the building.
