Duffy takes three Brits as Coldplay left empty-handed

COLDPLAY flopped at the Brits last night, walking away empty handed despite being nominated for four awards.

Singer-songwriter Duffy was the big winner on the night, taking three awards: best album, best British female solo artist and best breakthrough act.

The awards ceremony was opened by U2 with their new single Get on Your Boots.

Duffy’s record Rockferry was the best-selling album of 2008 and sold 4.5 million copies worldwide. She beat Adele, Beth Rowley, Estelle and MIA for the best female award.

Last night’s ceremony was hosted by Kylie Minogue and Gavin and Stacey stars James Corden and Mathew Horne.

Perennial indie underdogs Elbow took the Brit for best group. Former Jam frontman Paul Weller won best British male.

Veteran rockers Iron Maiden took the best live act award.

The Pet Shop Boys took the outstanding contribution to music award, while Florence & the Machine were named critics’ choice.

In the international categories, the Kings of Leon won best album and best group, while rapper Jay-Z took best male. Katy Perry was named best international female.
