WHEN Barack Obama formally becomes the Democratic presidential nominee tonight, he will deliver his acceptance speech on the same date Dr Martin Luther King Jr delivered his “I have a dream” speech.

King delivered that speech 45 years ago in Washington, DC.

Vincent Harding was a close friend to King and one of his former speechwriters. He worked with King during the final 10 years of his life. He says when it comes to racial equality in America the country has come a long way, but also has a long way to go.
