How the race is shaping up

Mr Obama won about 75% of the vote in Washington DC, nearly two-thirds in Virginia and almost 60% in Maryland.

Exit polls showed he narrowly defeated Ms Clinton among white voters in Virginia, 52% to 47%, for the first time in a Southern state and for the fourth time in a competitive primary this year.

He won 90% of the black vote in Virginia and almost as much in Maryland.
