Mitt Romney, a multimillionaire who had pumped more than $17 million (€11.5m) of his own money into the campaign by September, spent about $7m (€4.7m) on ads in Iowa, compared to Huckabee’s $1.4m (€0.9m).

Likewise, John Edwards remained in the mix with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, even though they broke all fundraising records last year.
