Black-and-white Emmy — imprisoned when she followed her owner into the shed, which he locked up for the winter — left tongue marks on the glass.

The 10-year-old pet was thought lost before her owner returned to the shed in Torbay, Devon, and found the skeletal cat inside.

Emmy’s family, who have just moved, gave her to the Blue Cross animal centre in Torquay because they were upset at the distress they had caused.

Centre manager Laura Valentine said : “She is absolutely fine now and is a little fighter.”

Meanwhile, a cat owner whose pet was found partially shaved for a second time has branded the attacks “sick”.

Tuppence the tabby is owned by publicans Colin and Heather Lang, from Kingswear, south Devon.

The cat is now afraid to go out after her hind legs and stomach were shaved.

“Someone out there is really sick, it is deliberate cruelty,” said Mr Lang.
