Goal evacuates aid staff amid tribal violence
Trócaire and Concern said their workers would remain in the east African country while the situation is closely monitored.
But Goal chief executive John O’Shea said: “We must put the safety of our workers before all other considerations. Nairobi has become too dangerous in recent days.”
Mr O’Shea warned the situation may deteriorate over the coming days and weeks as hatred between ethnic groups intensifies.
Concern worker Reiseal Ni Cheilleachair, based in Nairobi, said: “The resulting violence came as a shock to people and I don’t think people thought this could happen in Kenya.”
“People obviously are very worried. There is some tension but people are really hoping that this will sort itself out. It’s really caused shockwaves through the country and that can turn into people saying we don’t want this,” she added.
She said the violence caused added difficulties with food shortages in some areas and transport problems.
Trócaire said staff in Kenya were safe and assessing the security, political and humanitarian situation.
Michael Comerford, the agency’s assistant regional manager in east Africa, said there is a great deal of anger and disbelief following the disputed presidential election.
He said it was generally felt opposition candidate Raila Odinga was poised to claim victory.
The Department of Foreign Affairs warned of the risks of non-essential travel to Kenya.
“In light of the significant number of Irish citizens both resident and visiting Kenya as tourists, the Department of Foreign Affairs has set up the freefone number (1800 242 548) for anyone with concerns,” said Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern. He said there was no reason to believe any Irish citizens have been caught up in the violence.
The department, through the Honorary Consul in Nairobi, is continuing to monitor the situation.
