A BRITISH man was deported from the US after he ran across a main highway, through a field, across rail tracks and over a barbed wire fence at an airport in an apparent bid to catch a flight, airport officials said.

The 22-year-old was tackled by a security guard at Detroit Metro Airport.

Airport spokesman Michael Conway said the man was deported back to Britain last night.

“He caused us a great deal of trouble yesterday, but I felt quite sorry for him,” said Mr Conway. “He had missed a flight the night before and for some reason decided to go running across both east and west lanes of a 70mph highway waving a white towel above his head.”

Mr Conway said the man severely injured himself climbing the 10ft airport fence, which was topped with barbed wire.

“He landed and kept on running. We spotted him from the tower and on the cameras but he made it all the way to runway 22-right before airside operations and police stopped him.”

Mr Conway went on: “He was speaking very irrationally.”

He said police officials decided not to charge the man but instead deported him back to Britain last night.
