EVERYONE today could be descended from a small band of intrepid humans who headed for the beach 164,000 years ago, scientists believe.

They lived in caves on the southern tip of South Africa thousands of years before any other seaside communities were known to exist, new evidence has shown.

Experts think the group went there to escape harsh desert conditions and search for new food sources. As well as exploiting the sea, they were the first population known to have used red pigments for symbolic decoration, and the first to master “miniaturisation” of stone technology.
