Family’s anger at ‘crazy’ theory of hire car blood link to Madeleine

KATE McCann’s brother-in -law yesterday labelled the latest moves by the Portuguese police as “crazy”.

Family’s anger at ‘crazy’ theory of hire car blood link to Madeleine

John McCann said the idea that blood found in a hire car linked Ms McCann to Madeleine’s death did not make sense.

He said: “It seems highly implausible that after all the searches for Madeleine that had gone on she could be secreted into a hire car. I don’t understand it; it makes no sense.”

He also said there was growing frustration with the Portuguese police’s methods and called for them to get their investigation back on track.

“There’s a degree of almost anger, it’s more frustration. We just want them to get on with the real focus,” he said.

“My wee niece is missing and it’s not Gerry [Madeleine’s father] and Kate that are involved in this. Let’s get back to the real reason. What’s happened to that?”

Mr McCann also dismissed the idea that the little girl’s mother had killed her by accident and hidden her body.

“It doesn’t make sense if you look at the timelines on the night. They were there with other people, they had children to put to bed — it’s not feasible.

“Everybody who knows Gerry and Kate know that to implicate them is ridiculous. What’s being done about the man who was last seen with the child?”

Claiming the investigation was going too slowly, he said of the Portuguese police: “They are about four months too late, is my honest opinion. I wish they’d got on with it earlier.”

He cast doubt on whether Gerry and Kate would stick to their original plans to return to Britain next week.

“I do not know what will happen. Let’s see what happens over the next day.”

Mr McCann said the couple also wanted to be able to pay more attention to their other two children.

“We’ve got two other children that are stuck here and that’s why they wanted to get back,” he said.

When asked if he believed Madeleine was still alive, he said he did.

Mr McCann called for the Portuguese police to show the family any new evidence if they had it.

“We do not know what they are thinking — that is the problem.” He said he had talked to Gerry about five or six hours before.

He added: “It’s been crazy. None of us can actually believe it’s happening. At the same time we are all looking at it in a positive way.”

He called on the police to “get on with it” and fully exonerate Kate and Gerry.

He urged more honesty from the Portuguese police, saying: “If it’s bad news, give us the bad news. We are big boys and girls and we want to hear the truth. We want to get to the truth.”

Meanwhile, another family member said yesterday the idea that Madeleine’s parents could have harmed her is “ludicrous”.

Brian Kennedy, a great uncle of the missing girl, said: “As you can imagine, the family of Kate and Gerry McCann have been shocked by the news of recent events in Portugal and the campaign against them, and are sure that all those who have given their tremendous support over the past months will be equally amazed and disbelieving of what this wonderful couple are having to contend with, having already suffered the loss of their much-loved Madeleine.

“The notion that either of them would or could harm one of their children is ludicrous.”
