Writer sobs over claims that he drugged women

A TOP football reporter accused of trying to drug women with Valium-laced desserts for sex sobbed as he said he only had the drug to help him cope with the stress of his dying father.

If any of the drug got into their food it was an accident, Christopher Davies, 58, a one-time ghost writer of columns for George Best and Alan Ball, told Croydon Crown Court.

Mr Davies wined and dined three female friends in his home in Bromley, south-east London, in January 2006. He was “ashamed and mortified” that anyone would think he had done anything wrong.

One of the women found parts of a bright blue 10mg tablet of diazepam or Valium hidden inside the topping of their ice-cream dessert. Another had been drowsy and violently ill that night, the court heard.

Davies believes a shard of the tablet may have shot off as he split the tablet with a pair of kitchen scissors.

The case was adjourned to today.
