Locusts alert in Africa

WITH swarms of locusts threatening crops in a number of African countries, a UN agency has appealed for an additional £40 million in assistance.

The Rome-based UN Food and Agriculture Organisation said Mauritania was the worst-hit country while locust swarms have also been reported in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad and Senegal.

The locusts devour crops and destroy harvests.
