Food poisoning kills father on family holiday

THE body of a British father-of-two who died on holiday after falling ill with suspected food poisoning is due to be returned to Britain today.

Garry Smith, 49, from Swansea, south Wales, was halfway through a two-week holiday in Majorca with his wife and two children, aged seven and eight, when he became ill.

His widow Llinos, 35, told how her husband died 36 hours after he first seemed to be suffering symptoms of food poisoning.

After falling ill, Mr Smith’s condition later deteriorated and she called an ambulance, which took him from Cala d’Or where the family were staying, to hospital in the island’s capital Palma.

But Mr Smith died the following day, June 21.

His wife, a nurse, said she did not know the formal cause of death as yet but expected to have more information once her husband’s body was returned today.

Mrs Smith added: “I would not wish this on my worst enemy.

“He was fit and well, we have two small children, it was a family holiday. Thirty-six hours later I’m a widow with two small children.”
