30,000 homeless after blaze in slum

A FIRE raced through a Nairobi slum on Thursday night, destroying hundreds of ramshackle tin and timber houses and leaving up to 30,000 people homeless in the Kenyan capital.

There were no reports of casualties in the fire, said Mohammed Sheikh, district officer for the area.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known and officials were working to find shelter for the thousands of people who lived in the slum.
