Orphan who lost arms in Iraq war wins courage medal
The 12-year-old, whose determination to survive became a symbol of hope following the conflict to overthrow Saddam Hussein's regime, was recognised along with 12 British children who have all triumphed over adversity.
At the ceremony held in Westminster Abbey all the youngsters were praised and received medals after being honoured by the Woman's Own Children of Courage Awards now in its 30th year.
Ali, who received the International Child of Courage medal, said through an interpreter that he felt proud and added: "I am delighted to be receiving my Woman's Own Children of Courage Award today at Westminster Abbey, it's a great honour."
In March, images of Ali were seen world-wide after he lost both arms and sustained 35% burns in a bombing strike in Baghdad.
The tragedy also destroyed his home and claimed more than a dozen members of his family, including both parents.
The service at the Abbey was attended by a host of stars including Pop Idol judge Simon Cowell, rugby World Cup winner Josh Lewsey and television celebrities.
Others attending included former world champion boxer Chris Eubank, TV presenter and designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, England international and West Ham goalkeeper David James and Jill Halfpenny who plays Kate Mitchell on Eastenders.
Among the 12 winners was 11-year-old John Lyons, whose cool-headedness and bravery helped save his father's life after a water-skiing accident in Majorca.
Consultant surgeon Andrew Lyons, from Sevenoaks, Kent, suffered a severed arm after being struck in a speedboat accident.
Quick-thinking John switched off the boat's engine and dragged his father to the surface, preventing worse injury.
Also attending was Ahmad Haamza, another Iraqi boy who was injured during the recent war. He was treated in Iraq and Kuwait and has been fitted with an artificial foot and hand.
Melissa Craven, a seven-year-old from Stockport, who has a rare genetic disorder which causes her skin to blister if knocked, was ecstatic after receiving her large golden medal with her name embossed on the back.
She said: "I was really surprised and excited about the whole thing. I think it's a good idea we should get awards like this."
