We will continue to search for teenager’s body, vows police chief

Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Reynolds, speaking at a press conference at Chelmsford police station, said: "Our duty to Linda and Tony Jones is to keep trying, and we certainly will."

He said officers will again speak to Campbell to try to find the teenager as he was the "best source of intelligence".

Mr Reynolds said: "He's a cold, callous individual and these characteristics stayed with him through the whole investigation."

He said the investigation had been the largest case carried out by the force, which involved almost 1,000 officers and support staff.

He said: "The prosecution's closing speech concluded with the words that Campbell was beaten by technology.

"Consequently, I would like to express my gratitude to the various experts who gave evidence on behalf of the Crown. Their evidence was crucial in securing this verdict."

He thanked the media and public for their help with coverage of the investigation.

He said: "However, while this is a proud day for Essex Police and a good day for justice, we must not forget Linda and Tony Jones and their boys, as they try to rebuild their lives."

He told Mr and Mrs Jones: "I am sure Danielle would have been proud of the way you handled yourselves during the difficult investigation and long trial. You have been a credit to yourselves and to your sons, Ryan and Mitchell.

"I understand that the jury's verdict cannot fill the void left in your lives.

"However, I now hope you will be able to move forward in the knowledge that justice has been done."

He said media coverage of women who gave evidence that Campbell had taken or tried to take photos of them while they were teenagers prompted six other women had come forward.

He said at least four of them had met Campbell. He added: "And their story is similar to what prosecution witnesses told the court he did con them, he did on at least one occasion try to take photographs."
