India suffers flood fatalities

AT least 21 people have been killed in torrential rains which destroyed mud homes and washed away 50,000 hectares (123,500 acres) of farmland in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

The driving rain also caused road accidents. In one incident, a van carrying four people was swept away by the rain-fed Karjan river in Bharuch district. Meteorologists have forecast more monsoon rain for the region.
