‘Eating McDonald’s helped me lose weight’
Merab Morgan from North Carolina embarked on the project after watching Morgan Spurlock’s documentary, Super Size Me, which she felt insulted the intelligence of fat people by implying they could not resist opting for huge portions.
She claims she lost 37lb on the unorthodox diet by avoiding chips and sticking to Big Macs, ice cream and salads.
“I thought it’s two birds with one stone, to lose weight and to prove a point for the little fat people.
“Just because they accidentally put an apple pie in my bag instead of my apple dippers doesn’t mean I’m going to say, ‘Oh, I can eat the apple pie’.”
Ms Morgan, 35, memorised the calorie counts of every menu item and limited herself to 1,400 calories a day. She never struggled to locate her next meal under the big golden arches.
She spent up to $11 (€13.65) a day on food, sometimes ordering all three meals at once, and dropped from 227lb to 190lb.
Ms Morgan is not the first person to lose weight living on McDonald’s food. Soso Whaley from New Hampshire lost 35lb on the diet, which is documented in her independent film, Me & Mickey D.
Walt Riker, McDonald’s vice-president of corporate communications, said he was “pleased but not surprised” that customers had lost weight eating only at the fast food chain.
“Super Size Me really spurred a backlash based on common sense,” he said.
In making the 2004 documentary, Spurlock put on 25lb by eating at McDonald’s for a month. His health significantly deteriorated after consuming some 5,000 calories a day.
