US torture suspects begin appeal

THREE Americans sentenced to eight to 10 years in jail for torturing Afghans on a freelance hunt for terrorists began their appeal yesterday, despite the absence of their US lawyers.

Jonathan Idema, Brent Bennett and Edward Caraballo are seeking to overturn their convictions after a trial that embarrassed US and NATO forces.
