BURIED beneath the bent steel and pulverised concrete of New York's World Trade Center lay the sad artifacts of a national trauma: pieces of an airliner fuselage, half a phone handset, melted computer disks.

Plucked from the rubble, these and other physical reminders of the September 11 terrorist attacks now have a second life as bits of history.

They went on display yesterday at the New York State Museum in Albany, one of the handful of institutions gingerly beginning to exhibit artifacts from Ground Zero.
