BELGIAN prime minister Guy Verhofstadt was recovering in hospital yesterday, after his chauffeur-driven car crashed into a concrete pillar near his home and overturned several times.

Verhofstadt was returning to his home in Ghent last night from Brussels, 30 miles away, following two days of talks to save his government, when the accident happened.

Interior minister Patrick De Wael told the VTM TV station Verhofstadt had “a number of bruised ribs” and was already prepared to talk to police investigating the cause of the crash.
