Man gets life for murder of Swedish politician

MIJAILO MIJAILOVIC was jailed for life yesterday for the murder of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh.

Man gets life for murder of Swedish politician

The sentence came more than six months after Ms Lindh, one of the Scandinavian country's most popular politicians, was attacked while shopping unguarded in a Stockholm department store.

Ms Lindh, 46, was widely tipped as a future prime minister. Her death plunged the country into a state of shock and raised the spectre of the unsolved death of Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986.

The ruling against Mijailo Mijailovic was expected after the Stockholm district court last week rejected a request by the defence to sentence him to psychiatric care.

It was not immediately known if defence lawyer Peter Althin, who argued Mijailovic was mentally unstable and under heavy medication during the attack, would appeal the sentence.

Mijailovic, 25, said voices in his head, including that of Jesus, told him to attack Ms Lindh. He confessed to stabbing her repeatedly but said he didn't mean to kill her.

A Swede of Serbian origin, Mijailovic was arrested two weeks after the stabbing. He denied involvement for months, but confessed after being confronted with overwhelming evidence, including a DNA analysis linking him to the murder weapon a craftsman's knife.

His arrest came as a relief for many Swedes, still haunted by the unsolved murder of Mr Palme in 1986. Mr Palme was shot by an unknown gunman as he walked home from a cinema with his wife.

Many feared police would repeat the mistakes of the Palme investigation, as the days immediately after the attack failed to yield any solid leads. A first suspect was arrested after a week, but was later released for lack of evidence.

Police arrested Mijailovic, who had three previous convictions, at his home in a Stockholm suburb. Investigators dropped other leads after Mijailovic's clothes were found buried outside the Swedish capital with Ms Lindh's blood stains and British experts confirmed his DNA was on the murder weapon, which he had left at the scene.

A coroner testifying at the trial said Ms Lindh was stabbed at least seven times, with the fatal blow piercing her liver.
