AMERICAN-BORN panda Hua Mei is pregnant, just months after settling into her new home in south-western China.

The four-year-old panda, was the first foreign-born panda to be returned to its ancestral homeland. She arrived in February from San Diego Zoo.

Chinese vets, concerned that she had little knowledge of how to mate after living only in captivity, showed her videos of passionate pandas to prepare her for a series of “blind dates” with potential mates. Now Hua Mei is due to give birth in September, say researchers at the Wolong Giant Panda Protection Centre.
