THE appointment of Michael Grade as the chairman of the BBC was already causing controversy yesterday.

Mr Grade fills the vacancy left by Gavyn Davies, who departed after the Hutton report into the death of Dr David Kelly.

During his time as chief executive of Channel 4, Mr Grade was labelled “pornographer-in-chief” by the Daily Mail newspaper.

John Beyer, director of Mediawatch-UK, the broadcasting standards watchdog, said Mr Grade was the wrong choice.
