Grandmother arrested as dead babies found in attic

Ann Mahoney, a former nurse, was taken into custody by police investigating the discovery of a baby’s body in another attic six weeks ago.

But when officers searched the 64-year-old’s home in Gurnos, Merthyr Tydfil, they found the remains of two more infants.

“The local woman is currently helping police with their inquiries at Merthyr Tydfil police station.

“Following the arrest at her home in the Gurnos and a subsequent search of the property officers discovered what they believed to be the remains of two further infants, which were enclosed in bags in the attic.”

Ms Mahoney, who has been a school governor and secretary of Merthyr Labour Party, was last night being interviewed by detectives.

The end-of-terrace two-bedroom council house has been sealed off. But detectives confirmed other properties in the area may be searched.

Forensic tests are being carried out on the latest babies’ bodies to be found as it emerged that some months ago Ms Mahoney had moved out of the house where the first body was found. That baby was found dead on March 20 by a family moving into the home. South Wales Police have spent the past seven weeks tracing all the occupants of the house.

At the time, police said the babyfound in March had been dead for years rather than months. It is believed there have been difficulties in determining gender, cause of death or age.

Mrs Mahoney won the Merthyr Crime Prevention Panel Citizen of the Year Award 2002, and looked after elderly people in the community until her recent retirement.
