Indian court orders Bhopal victims compensation

INDIA’S supreme court has ordered the government to release millions of dollars in compensation for victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy which killed 3,000 people.

The court directed that €263.5 million be distributed among the more than 500,000 victims and dependants. Some of the original compensation figure of €378m has already been paid out, but legal delays held up the rest.

Three thousand people died in the days immediately following the disaster at the Union Carbide pesticide plant.
