Czech Prime Minister Spidla to quit

CZECH Republic Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla has announced he plans to resign this week and has already stepped down as chief of the governing Social Democratic Party.

Spidla narrowly survived a no-confidence vote in his leadership of the party on Saturday, but said that he had nonetheless lost the trust of his party following its poor showing in elections for the European Parliament.
