EU body proposed in battle to halt dwindling fish stocks

A NEW European agency to monitor and control fishing fleets was proposed by the European Commission yesterday.

Its job would be to improve co-ordination of national fisheries inspections and surveillance as part of the continuing campaign to halt the crisis over dwindling stocks.

More detailed plans for the creation of the Community Fisheries Control Agency (CFCA) will be presented by the end of the year the Commission said, insisting that the rules of the Common Fisheries Policy must be applied and enforced.
