RIVERS, swollen by rain and melting snow, forced hundreds of residents in the Czech Republic and Germany to flee their homes yesterday.

Residents evacuated the Czech town of Olomouc, 250 kilometres south-east of Prague, as the Morava river burst through flood barriers early yesterday.

A total of 2,500 people may be evacuated if water levels rise further.
