Prince Harry set for British military career
The 20-year-old prince will enlist at the prestigious Royal Military Academy early next year, beginning his life as a career soldier.
Third in line to the throne, Harry passed his Regular Commissions Board (RCB) assessment for the college, having faced an assault course, physical tests, a planning exercise and interviews.
He admitted a four-day taster of serving in forces was “very challenging”, but said he was looking forward to signing up.
It was a dream come true for the prince, who revealed that he has “set his sights” on joining the army.
Photos taken during the assessment showed a determined Harry, deep in concentration, tackling an assault course wearing a hard hat and a blue competitor’s bib bearing the number 13.
He is likely to be referred to by his surname Wales when he starts his time in the military.
The prince, who will be an officer cadet, is believed to be the most senior royal in recent memory to attend the academy and opt for the army rather than the navy.
Harry could even be called to fight in war zones after finishing his 44-week training. Last year, a number of new Sandhurst officers were posted straight to serve in Iraq.
The prince recently expressed his desire to carry on the legacy of his mother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, when he was filmed for a television documentary about his visit to the impoverished southern African nation of Lesotho.
But from early next year, he will be dedicating the majority of his time to tasks such as learning how to use high explosive grenades and mastering war studies.
