UKRAINE’S orange revolution kicked off the new year of 2005 with a bang in Europe and produced another candidate for European Union membership.

During the year the future borders of the EU has became a very real issue for the member states with Turkey and the Balkan states at the gate.

The French and Dutch 'no' to the EU Constitution was partly blamed on plans to bring Turkey into the bloc.
