POLICE have arrested a group of students who had hatched an elaborate plan to cut off power and telephone services to their middle school, slay classmates and teachers with guns and knives, then escape from their small town in Alaska.

The arrest on Saturday of six students in North Pole, a town of 1,600 people about 14 miles south-east of state capital Fairbanks, marks America’s second break-up of an alleged Columbine-style school attack within a week.

Five Kansas teenagers suspected of planning a shooting rampage at their high school were arrested on Thursday, the seventh anniversary of the massacre in suburban Colorado.
