Huntley ‘flipped’ after row with Carr

IT was claimed yesterday that the thought of Maxine Carr going on a wild night out may have pushed jealous and possessive Ian Huntley over the edge on the evening he killed Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

Huntley ‘flipped’ after row with Carr

He killed the girls soon after 6.30pm on August 4 last year. At 6.24pm he had spoken by phone to Carr when she told him she was going out.

Pictures of Carr kissing various people were taken at around 10pm at an 18th birthday party in Carr's home town of Grimsby. In one picture she was seen kissing 6ft 5ins rugby player Mark Thomas.

She also kissed off-duty soldier Joseph Abakah, 21, and had her picture taken with other revellers. Huntley, meanwhile, was back at 5 College Close, Soham already covering his tracks after killing Holly and Jessica. After Carr's phone row with Huntley at 6.24pm, she sent a text message saying: "Don't make me feel bad that I'm with my family."

Huntley's relatives said they believed jealousy over Carr's night out drove him to murder.

His mother Lynda Nixon, 49, said: "I'm convinced that all this happened because he was angry with Maxine. He flipped and did this terrible thing.

"The telephone calls in which he told her he was angry that she was going out to enjoy herself that night are the crux of this. I know I'm right.

"He was just jealous of what she was doing and the fact that she was going out. Carr, who had gone home for a week, was out with her mother Shirley when they gatecrashed a party at The Parity club in Grimsby. Thomas, 18, told how he met Maxine.

He said: "I kissed her to win a £20 bet with my mates.

"We were dancing for a little bit .... then she pulled me towards her and we kissed. Labourer Thomas was with pals at an 18th birthday party for Rachel Wigfield.

Rachel, now 19, said Carr kissed her on both cheeks and said: "Happy birthday." But Rachel had never met her. She added: "She just joined in the party. When the partygoers moved to another club called the Exchange, Carr followed them. Joe, 22, said: "At one point she pulled her top right down to show me a tattoo of a bumblebee on her left breast. A friend at the party took the photos with a digital camera. Then Carr's face appeared on television in connection with the Soham tragedy.

Rachel's mother Blanche contacted police to tell them Carr had been in Grimsby on August 4. Carr had already told police she was in Soham.

The pictures were seized by detectives and shown to both Carr and Huntley during police interviews.

She wrote to Huntley in jail, saying: "They have a photo of me giving someone a birthday kiss and are trying to accuse me of having an affair with this person, whose name I barely remember."

But she lied when she told him: "It was the lad's 18th birthday and everyone gave him a kiss to celebrate."

Angry Huntley stopped writing to Carr for a week and accused her of cheating. He later wrote to say he was "hurt".
