POLICE in Belgrade have arrested a man suspected of being the sniper who shot dead Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.

Djindjic's successor, Zoran Zivkovic, identified the man as Zvezdan Jovanovic, a former deputy commander of an elite unit of police troops formed under former President Slobodan Milosevic.

The unit is still operational and has links to organised crime, police said.
