PALACE accountants insisted the Queen and the royal family were value for money yesterday, costing each person in Britain 61p (€0.92) a year.

But annual figures released by aides revealed the large travel bills caused by the royals using expensive chartered flights.

The total cost of keeping the monarchy in the last financial year was €55.1 million down from €55.3m in 2003/04.

The Buckingham Palace accounts showed that an official trip by the Prince of Wales to Sri Lanka, Australia and back from Fiji on a chartered plane cost nearly €450,746.

A chartered flight by the Duke of York to the Far East to promote British interests cost just under €187,772.

It was also revealed that the Queen has received a business rate rebate on Buckingham Palace of more than €1.5m.

A scheduled flight by the Duke of Edinburgh to Toronto to attend a gala celebrating his International Award Association came to around €19,228.

Yet when heir to the throne Charles flew to Washington for former US President Ronald Reagan's funeral, the chartered plane ride was priced at €127,699.

The bill for royal travel amounted to €7.5m and was paid for by grants-in-aid. It also emerged that Britain's Queen is cheaper than her European counterparts.

Accountants at Buckingham Palace also managed to reduce the royal insurance bill by a dramatic 50%.

Premiums were slashed on things such as employers' liability after they put their business out to tender and found a better deal.

Prince Andrew's travel arrangements came under close scrutiny in January this year after National Audit Office figures showed that he spent more than €450,647 of public money in a single year on hiring planes and helicopters.

But yesterday's accounts put the total cost of his air travel for journeys over €3,755 in 2004/2005 at more than €841,195.

The cost of the Royal train in 2004/2005 was over €1m.
