Scottish midfielder Archie Meekison was persuaded to join Cork City by the style of play manager Barry Robson intends to play in the League of Ireland Premier Division. He becomes City's first signing of the off-season.

The 24-year-old, who began his career with Dundee United, spent last season at Sligo Rovers, having previously played for Bohemians.

He told the Cork City website. “It’s a great privilege to sign for Cork City. I got really excited when I spoke to the manager and he told me the type of football that he wants to play next season.

“Cork City is a massive club. I can already feel the buzz around the place, and I’m really excited to be here."

He added: "I obviously did my own research on Cork and saw how strong the squad was last year.

"You guys obviously flew the league. I've seen the quality of the player. I know the likes of Seanie Maguire

"There were a few factors that came into play. But first of all, speaking to the manager was a really good confidence booster for me to come down."

Robson welcomed his new addition, saying: “I’m happy to get Archie signed up. He’s someone that we have been watching for a while and we identified him as a player that would fit in our plans for next season.

"He’s still a young player, but he’s got a few years of experience at Premier Division level and he brings the type of quality that we’ve been looking for. Physically, he’s a quick player, and technically fits in with our style.”

Meekison has 13 goal involvements in 56 Premier Division appearances and hopes he become part of the supply line to City's attackers.

"I think, especially in the positions that I play, numbers are very important and hopefully I can bring a bit of quality in the final third and maybe tee up those guys as well. Because I'm sure they're going to want to be scoring as many as possible next year."

City are also set to complete the signing of English winger Connor Parsons from Bohemians.
