Balogun was unhappy Everton raised doubts about his health

A deal to sign the USA striker from Monaco fell through late on deadline day.

Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro says Folarin Balogun pulled out of a move to Everton because the USA striker was unhappy at how he was treated during his medical.

Everton boss David Moyes has Thierno Barry as his only recognised striker after a deadline day move for Balogun fell through. Scuro says the late collapse was down to the player's impression of how he was treated on Merseyside.

Scuro told BBC Sport: We had a clear agreement for Balogun to go to Everton. Balogun flew [Tuesday] morning to complete his medical and sign a contract. At 4pm, Balogun was in Liverpool completing his medical. Everything was going pretty well.

"Around 7pm we were contacted by Everton, who raised concerns about Balogun's medical. It took around two or three hours to go through the assessments, consult other doctors and review the scans.

"Around 10pm our time, maybe a bit earlier, Everton realised there was no issue and decided they were ready to sign the contract.

"The Premier League has a mechanism where clubs can request additional time to complete paperwork. This was done five minutes before the transfer deadline in England for us to complete all the paperwork between Monaco, Everton and Balogun.

"I signed the contract. Everton signed the contract. At the last moment, the player decided not to sign.

"Basically, Balogun's position was: 'I'm not feeling comfortable with the way the club treated me. I'm not comfortable with the doubts raised about my future or my health. I have no issue, so I'm not comfortable signing a contract here.'"

Chelsea were also left furious with Monaco after a £47.1million deal to sign midfielder Lamine Camara collapsed late on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old had completed a medical as the London club looked to secure a replacement for Enzo Fernandez, whose move to Manchester City for a joint-British record £125m was sanctioned several hours earlier.

Chelsea sources say that Monaco, having confirmed agreement of the deal in writing, reneged on their commitment and informed the club they were backing out of the move after the transfer deadline had passed, with their conduct described by one source as “extraordinary and deeply unprofessional”.

The club believe that Monaco’s willingness to sell the Senegal international was conditional upon striker Balogun’s proposed move to Everton, which also collapsed late on deadline day.

Chelsea sources say no formal reason has been given by Monaco for backing out of their agreement.
