Enzo Fernandez will be allowed to leave Chelsea this summer if the club’s asking price of £120million is met, the Press Association understands.

The 25-year-old has six years to run on his contract and the club are determined to turn a profit on a player they signed from Benfica for a then-British record £107m in 2023.

It emerged on Wednesday that Fernandez has told the club he wishes to leave, with Real Madrid – a club with whom he openly flirted earlier in the season – a likely destination.

He was suspended internally for two matches in April after telling a podcast that he would like to move to the Spanish capital, while he also told Argentinian media in the aftermath of March’s Champions League exit to Paris St Germain that he was unsure he would remain beyond the summer.

The length of contract he is tied to means Chelsea are under no pressure to sell. PA understands the club are planning for Fernandez to be involved and available next season to incoming manager Xabi Alonso but that the player’s stance means they will consider sanctioning his departure for a club-record fee.

He scored 15 goals and made seven assists last season in finishing runner-up in the club’s player of the season awards.

His signing in February 2023 in the aftermath of helping Argentina win the World Cup was an early coup by owners BlueCo, then in their first years of ownership, and he has been considered a key part of their long-term plans.

The club intend to invest in the close season in experienced players who can take Chelsea closer to challenging for the Premier League title and to do so they will require significant funds.

Real are reported to be unsure over whether to make an official bid with the Blues’ asking price believed to be a stumbling block.
