The title defence of Shamrock Rovers has endured a false start after the champions’ fixture against newly-promoted Dundalk on Friday night was postponed.
Tallaght Stadium is considered one of the best League of Ireland pitches but incessant rain over recent days in the capital led to a pitch inspection at 11am. Officials didn’t take long to declare the game unplayable due to a waterlogged surface.
Another date will have to be found for the fixture but as it was it was due to be televised live, Virgin Media Two will now broadcast Derry City versus Sligo Rovers at The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium, with a new kick-off time of 8pm.
If the game isn’t refixed for early next week, the introduction to the 2026 season for Rovers will be at Shelbourne next Friday. The relaying of a new artificial pitch at Oriel Park means Dundalk are playing all four of their opening games away from home. They head to local rivals Drogheda United.
