Munster Senior Cup round of 16: Midleton 0 1 Cork City

A Charlie Hanover goal at the end of the first half was the difference as Cork City defeated Midleton FC 1-0 in the Round of 16 of the Munster Senior Cup at Knockgriffin Park.

It was an entertaining affair that came down to the dying seconds as the home side pushed for an equaliser.

The Rebel Army fielded their U20s while Midleton started a number of League of Ireland veterans, in addition to former Cork senior hurler Cormac Beausang.

The Magpies went into this as reigning Munster Senior League Premier Division champions, Keane Cup holders, and at the midway point of their season.

City started well, their issue was creating a clear opening in a backline marshalled by Robert O’Connor and Jamie Collins.

Cillian Murphy was the only player to try something early on, and his effort rolled harmlessly wide.

Hanover then found space on the edge of the area before the break and a stunning shot from the teenager hit the roof of the net in the 44th minute.

Midleton did everything in an attempt to get an equaliser, and Graham Cummins’ side thought they'd won a penalty when a Brian Colman shot looked to have hit the hand of a City defender.

The referee waved this on, and a succession of late corners came to nothing for the home side.

MIDLETON: Diarmuid Byrne; Liam Lynch, Robert Walsh, Robert O’Connor, Jamie Collins; Killian Murphy, Michael McCarthy (Dylan Lyons 81), Luke Duggan-Murray, Jake Hegarty; James McCarthy, Cormac Beausang (Brian Coleman 58).

CORK CITY: AJ Nash; Finn Dalton, Liam Quinn, Luke Downey; Dara McCormick, Charlie Hanover (Sean Richmond 60), Cillian Murphy (Jordan McCarthy 85), Ike Manjor-Georgewill; Tom McGrath, Brody Lee (Jayden O’Donovan 60), Matthew Murray.
