Amber Barrett’s latest stop on her European journey is France where the Ireland international striker will line out for top-flight outfit Racing Club Strasbourg.
The scorer of the most famous goal in Irish women’s football – clinching World Cup qualification against Scotland – has penned a contract until 2028 and will wear the No 10 jersey.
Barrett, who turned 30 last week, is almost six years on the continent, starting in Germany with FC Koln and Turbine Potsdam before joining Standard Liège in the summer of 2023.
She bagged 22 goals in 32 matches in Belgium but has opted to move onto a club that currently sit sixth in the Arkema Premier League.
Last season was their first back in the top division after five years and they finished ninth.
Strasbourg, as a club, are part of the BlueCo multi-club consortium that has Chelsea as its centrepiece.
The group, led by American Todd Boehly, acquired Racing Strasbourg in 2023, investing in both the men’s and women’s sections of the French outfit.
Barrett’s momentous winner at Hampden Park in 2022 is one of nine goals she’s scored for Ireland over 55 caps.
Meanwhile, Ireland will face the Netherlands in their opening World Cup qualifier on March 3rd. That game will be played at the 10,000-seater Tallaght Stadium and it remains to be seen whether one of the two other home matches, against Poland on Saturday, April 18, or Netherlands on Friday, June 5, will be moved to either Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork or the national stadium at Lansdowne Road.
Ireland beat Belgium in a playoff last October to seal their place in League A of the qualifiers. Crucially, that victory over two legs guarantees them entry into the playoffs for next year’s World Cup in Brazil regardless of how they fare in this four-nation pool.
Tuesday, March 3: Ireland v Netherlands, Tallaght Stadium.
Saturday, March 7: Netherlands v Ireland, Stadion Galgenwaard, Utrecht.
Tuesday, April 14: Poland v Ireland, Polsat Plus Arena, Gdańsk.
Saturday, April 18: Ireland v Poland, Venue TBC.
Friday, June 5: Ireland v France, Venue TBC.
