Micky van de Ven's goal of the season contender helped Tottenham provide boss Thomas Frank with much-needed home comforts after a 4-0 thrashing of Copenhagen in the Champions League.
Frank watched Spurs deliver a tepid display in a poor London derby loss to Chelsea on Saturday, which sparked boos at full-time and an unfortunate flashpoint between Van de Ven and Djed Spence.
Van de Ven and Spence ignored the instructions of Frank to applaud the home fans, but an apology by the duo on Monday was followed by a sensational strike by the Dutch defender.
Vice-captain Van de Ven carried the ball from the edge of his penalty area to score a superb solo goal in the 64th minute.
It put Tottenham 3-0 up but was decisive as Brennan Johnson, who produced a 19th-minute opener, was controversially sent off at the start of the second half minutes after Wilson Odobert added a second.
Substitute Joao Palhinha added gloss to the score with 23 minutes left before Richardson squandered a late spot-kick as Spurs produced the biggest win of Frank's 17-game tenure at the perfect time to move onto eight points in the Champions League and keep alive their hopes of a top-eight finish.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich made it 16 wins from 16 games this season to underline their credentials as early favourites, beating holders Paris St Germain 2-1 away as Luis Diaz scored two goals and was shown a red card.
The Colombian winger struck twice before being sent off for a violent tackle on Achraf Hakimi on the stroke of halftime.
PSG, who reduced the arrears through Joao Neves, dominated possession after the break but failed to make it fully count and slipped to their first defeat in the competition since last season's quarter-final second leg against Aston Villa.
The result kept Bayern top of the 36-team league on a maximum 12 points, with PSG in third, three points adrift and with more injury concerns after Hakimi and Ousmane Dembele were replaced early.
Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid got a 3-1 home victory against Union Saint-Gilloise, with goals from Julian Alvarez, Conor Gallagher and Marcos Llorente keeping Diego Simeone's side in the hunt for qualification.
The result leaves Atletico 14th in the league phase standings on six points from four matches, level with five other teams, while Belgium champions Union Saint-Gilloise sit 26th with three points and outside the qualification spots.
