Wolves have sacked Vítor Pereira in the wake of their 3-0 defeat by Fulham, which left them bottom with two points from 10 games and eight points adrift of the last safe spot. The move comes despite his signing a three-year contract in September.

The Portuguese was appointed last December in succession to Gary O’Neil, with Wolves 19th, with nine points from 16 matches. He quickly reinvigorated the team and they were safe by late April, before finishing 16th, earning 33 points from their last 22 games.

His approach brought widespread praise, with regular appearances in local pubs to celebrate victories with supporters. However, in the summer Matheus Cunha was sold to Manchester United for £62.5m and Rayan Aït-Nouri to Manchester City for £31m, among others, and the players brought in have struggled to make an impact.

The forward Jørgen Strand Larsen, bought for £23m from Celta Vigo, scored his first goal from the penalty spot in the defeat by Burnley, while Fer López, a £19m signing also from Celta, is yet to get off the mark.

At Craven Cottage Emmanuel Agbadou’s 36th-minute red card left the struggling side with plenty to do, having already been 1-0 down after Ryan Sessegnon’s low finish past Sam Johnstone. Harry Wilson double the hosts’ lead past the hour mark before a comical own goal from Yerson Mosquera in the 75th minute.

Against Burnley a week ago, Wolves came from 2-0 down to level before half-time but were beaten by an injury-time goal. With fans chanting for Pereira to be sacked, he went over to them and had to be held back.
