Cobh Ramblers have been thrown into crisis ahead of Friday’s First Division playoff as Mick McDermott will not manage the team at Treaty United.

Uncertainty over the Belfast native’s future surfaced when he wasn’t on the bench for Friday’s final regulation game of the season at home to champions Dundalk.

McDermott led the Rams to their highest finish for eight years - First Division runners-up in his maiden season - but the club confirmed an abrupt parting of ways as they head into the critical phase of the season.

“Cobh Ramblers FC can confirm that Michael McDermott is no longer first team manager,” read a statement issued on Monday night.

“We would like to thank Mick for his service to the club this season and wish him well in the future.

“Richie Holland will take charge of the team on an interim basis for the upcoming playoffs.

“As we enter this important stage of the season, we encourage all supporters to get behind Richie and the squad. The support of our community has always been at the heart of the club, and we look forward to continuing that journey together — through the playoffs and into the future.”

McDermott (51) indicated the end was nigh on Friday when posting a cryptic message on his Instagram account.

“Football is pure and simple - about players, fans, relationships and honesty,” it read, accompanied by a picture in his office with belongings.

“It’s not a plaything or PlayStation. To the future!”

Cobh were acquired by US-based Digital Athlete group in July. They assumed a 90% stake after the initial investment group who’d taken the club out fan ownership this time last year, FC32, encountered financial difficulties.
