Cobh Ramblers ended their three match losing run by defeating UCD 1-0 at St Coleman’s Park.
Cian Bargary got the winning goal in the 55th minute after a cross by Waterford’s Shane Griffin caused chaos inside in the box.
The full-time result means that Mick McDermott’s side stay in third place, after a difficult spell that saw defeats to promotion rivals Bray Wanderers, Wexford, and Dundalk.
The Students wanted to join that list, and they started fast by pushing up from the minute the game kicked off.
Once this faded, Cobh found their attacking groove and Bargary worked with Barry Coffey to get crosses into the box.
The closest they got was a low ball to an onrushing Nolan Evers, and this narrowly missed the defender in the 31st minute.
Cian Coleman also got on the end of a corner and this was stopped by Dara Kavanagh on the goal-line.
The Students’ goalkeeper pushed a shot from Waterford’s Shane Griffin into the path of Coffey at the end of the half, and the midfielder rolled this wide.
Sean Brennan had the best chance for UCD, and this was pushed out for a corner that came to nothing.
The game restarted with Michael McCullagh hitting the side netting at the Liam McMahon Stand.
A lull followed and it was broken by Waterford’s Shane Griffin dropping the ball into the box. Colman helped break this down for Bargary for a stunning strike that opened the scoring.
The Students struggled to get through and get a chance to equalise and attempts from distance were stopped by Timothy Martin, who did not put a foot wrong all evening.
