Youngster James McAtee scored a hat-trick as Manchester City romped to a comfortable FA Cup victory over neighbours Salford City, owned by Manchester United's famous "Class of 92"

Ryan Giggs was in the technical area alongside Salford manager Karl Robinson while Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes were in the directors box at the Etihad Stadium but they could only look on helplessly as their League Two club were outclassed.

They came into the game on the back of six successive wins without conceding a goal but the 65 places between the two clubs in English football's pyramid was evident from the kick-off - even though Pep Guardiola rotated his squad and included a number of youngsters for the third round tie.

It was a memorable night for three of the City starlets with midfielder McAtee leading the way with his second-half treble and striker Divin Mubama and defender Nico O'Reilly also scoring their first senior goals for the club.

Jack Grealish ended over a year without a goal by converting a penalty while Jeremy Doku bagged the other two, one of them a penalty, as City easily secured their place in the fourth round.

Doku started the rout as early as the eight minute when he swept home a pass from Grealish after a fine burst from midfield by Matheus Nunes. Nunes then set up an easy second for debutant Mubama - who was signed from West Ham last summer - and Academy graduate O'Reilly added the third before half-time with an assured finish from Doku’s pass.

Grealish scored the fourth early in the second half after he had been tripped by Ossama Ashley. McAtee, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, scored his first and City’s fifth with a neat finish from Doku’s cross.

Doku made it six from the spot after his shot had been handled by Salford skipper Carlos Tilt. The impressive McAtee then added two more from close range as City carved huge holes in Salford’s shell-shocked defence.
